Jonathan Meese was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1970 and lives in Berlin and Ahrensburg. His artistic work encompasses painting, drawing, graphic art, sculpture, performance, stage and costume design, and directing theatre and opera productions.
The artist has presented his work in numerous retrospective solo exhibitions at national and international museums. ‘Revolution’, 2003 at the Kestnergesellschaft Hannover; ‘Mama Johnny’, 2006 at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg; ‘Erzstaat Atlantisis’, Arp Museum im Bahnhof Rolandseck, 2009; ‘Jonathan Meese Sculpture’, 2010 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, USA; "Jonathan Meese. Malermeese - Meesermaler‘, 2013 at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, Austria; 2018 ’Die Irrfahrten des Jonathan Meese‘ at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and ’Dr. Zuhause : K.U.N.S.T. (Erzliebe)" at the Kunsthalle St. Annen in Lübeck, 2019.
