Moritz Frei studied fine art at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts in the class of Peter Piller.
In 2016 he founded the publishing house berlinartbooks (www.berlinartbooks.com), which publishes many of his artist books and editions. In 2025, he launched berlinartfilms (www.berlinartfilms.com), a platform for art film festivals in public spaces, together with Marian Luft.
Frei works across media, using photography, video, text, installation, performance, sound, and painting. His works are often site-specific, are partly participatory, and draw on everyday objects, found objects, or language. By focusing on the inconspicuous and random, he transforms casual moments into reflections on social structures, institutional contexts, and the meaning of everyday things.
He has had solo exhibitions at venues including the Museum Wiesbaden (2018), the Pavilion at the Volksbühne Berlin (2023), and the Künstlerhaus Saarbrücken (2024). He has created permanent light installations for, among others, the Hamburger Kunsthalle (2021) and the Museum Wiesbaden (2024).
